Insulin injections

In the USA over 70% of diabetics use an insulin syringe to inject insulin, but in Europe most diabetics use an insulin pen to inject insulin simply, safely and discreetly. This is why many diabetics in Europe are no longer familiar with handling an insulin syringe or withdrawing and injecting insulin.

However, there are situations in which insulin syringes are a viable alternative.

  • Individual mixtures of insulin types: insulin can be withdrawn directly from an ampoule, allowing you to mix it with other insulin typess, provided these are suitable.

  • The use of U40 insulin types: there are no pre-filled pen ampoules or insulin pens for insulin types with a concentration of only 40 IU/mL. Insulin syringes are available for insulin concentrations of U40 and U100.

In any case, you should learn how to handle an insulin syringe for safety reasons alone:

  • Loss of or damage to an insulin pen: in some circumstances a new insulin pen is not immediately available. Insulin syringes and insulin can be found in any pharmacy.

  • It is recommended that you carry an insulin syringe when travelling to ensure a supply of insulin even in emergencies.
