September 17 is finally here: after intensive preparation, our polymechanics Gavin and Marcel are competing in SwissSkills, the national competition for the best young talent. They are preparing for this special moment with a lot of dedication, training, and team spirit.
Precision and team spirit
Participating in SwissSkills is a real highlight. "It's an honor to be able to showcase my skills at the national level," says Gavin about his participation. Marcel also sees the competition as a special opportunity: "SwissSkills is a great opportunity for me to prove my skills and measure myself against other polymechanics."
Preparations have been in full swing for weeks. Manufacturing workpieces, simulating scenarios, training precision – all under real competition conditions. "I'm preparing very intensively. Accuracy and time management are particularly important. We also analyze and check each other's work," explains Gavin. Marcel adds: "I try to practice different possible scenarios – that's the only way I can remain confident under pressure."
Skills that make the difference
In addition to technical understanding and manual dexterity, programming skills in the field of computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) are also crucial. "These skills will be particularly in demand at the competition – along with the ability to work under high pressure," says Gavin about certain skills that are particularly sought after at Swiss Skills.
But even though the competition is the focus, there is much more at stake for both of them.
I believe that I will grow enormously, both professionally and personally. I am learning to deal with challenging situations and to work accurately under time pressure, says Gavin about his participation. Marcel adds: By participating, I can gain valuable experience, expand my network, and improve my skills.
Valuable experience for the future
Both are actively supported by Ypsomed: time for targeted training, access to machines and materials, and the opportunity to practice on the exact machine that will be used in the competition.
This is a huge advantage for us – and shows how much the company is behind us,
they both agree.
Swiss vocational championships
SwissSkills is the central Swiss vocational championship, in which over 1 100 young talented professionals compete in more than 90 professions – including polymechanics. As winners in their category, they can proudly call themselves Swiss champions. Those who perform particularly well at SwissSkills can also qualify for international championships such as EuroSkills or WorldSkills.
