Burgdorf – With a formal groundbreaking ceremony yesterday, Ypsomed officially launched the construction of its second production facility in Schwerin. As part of the “Schwerin 2” project, the site will be expanded over the coming years in two phases. With this expansion, the company is increasing its production capacity to meet the growing global demand for high-quality selfcare medical technology products.
The expansion of our Schwerin site is part of our global growth strategy to respond to the rising demand for self-treatment solutions. We are combining forward-looking production with the highest quality standards and ecological responsibility. At the same time, we are creating attractive jobs and contributing to the economic development of the region,
said Frank Mengis, Chief Operating Officer at Ypsomed, at the event.
Expansion of the Schwerin site
The first phase of construction of Schwerin 2 began in January 2025. Over the next two years, new production halls, a fully automated high-bay warehouse, an administration building, and a central technical facility will be built on a site covering a total of 37,000 square metres. The second construction phase will add a further 17,000 square metres of production space. The total investment amounts to more than half a billion Swiss francs.
Sustainable construction and future-oriented energy supply
Ypsomed places great emphasis on sustainable building practices. The new facility is being constructed in line with the internationally recognised LEED Gold standard (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) for environmentally friendly buildings. The roofs of the production buildings in Schwerin will be fully equipped with photovoltaic systems, and Ypsomed has applied to the authorities for the installation of a wind turbine to supply its own electricity.
Creation of new jobs and apprenticeships
As part of the first phase of expansion, Ypsomed will create around 350 new jobs and 20 additional apprenticeship positions, in addition to the existing 440 roles. The second phase will add a further 300 jobs and 15 more apprenticeships. In doing so, Ypsomed is making a significant contribution to the economic development of the region and offering young people in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern long-term career opportunities.
Ypsomed’s global growth strategy
The expansion of the Schwerin site is part of Ypsomed’s global growth strategy, which aims to bring the company closer to its customers. Additional production facilities are under construction or in planning at other internationally important locations. Ypsomed will open its first proprietary factory in Changzhou in China at the end of June, and in the United States, the search for a suitable production site is currently underway, with the project expected to begin later this year. Production capacities at the existing sites in Burgdorf and Solothurn in Switzerland are also being continuously optimised and expanded.
